RUGBY: Bajan Blues draw with T&T Extreme in Super League, 23 December 2004 10:08:00 PM
Match Reports
On a grey afternoon with thunder and lightning in the background, the Bajan Blues started their game at the Garrison on Saturday, against the new team, playing their first Caribbean Super League fixture, Trinidad and Tobago Extreme Rugby.

Blues were playing against a stiff breeze in the first half but were eager to avenge the heavy defeat they suffered at the hands of Northerns RFC earlier in the season.

The conditions dictated that the ball was kept among the forwards for long periods, and the Blues forwards dominated their Trini rivals. Matt Warwick and Dale Cumberbatch were often first to the breakdown in play, enabling the captain, George Nicholson to make some thrusting runs up the middle of the field.

Unfortunately, the outsides did not make as much good use of the ball provided for them by the forward pack, often kicking away good possession. This enabled T and T Extreme to come more into the game, and their better handling in a flowing move enabled them to send Garvin Toussaint over in the corner for a try.

The Blues forwards were stung into greater heroics but their continual pressure on a tiring T and T pack, which defended with great determination, could not be converted into points.

The second half brought more pressure from the Blues scrum, with the front row of Martin Varga, Donovan Bagwell and Paul Mullard being prominent in both tight and loose play. Kip Blumenshein and Omar Bynoe made some penetrating runs and more scores could have resulted if the final pass had gone to hand.

It was fitting that the only Blues score came from a concerted forward rush, with George Nicholson doing the scoring.

Final score 5-5, the first draw in the short history of the Caribbean Super League.
