Another scorching day in Cayman saw Guyana and Jamaica make their tournament debuts.
In the first game Guyana defeated Barbados in a close game that could have gone either way while in the second game, Mexico registered their first ever U19 victory in a well deserved 3-0 victory over Jamaica.
Barbados outside centre Ben Petit, started where he left off on Saturday, slotting home two early penalties to give his team a 6-0 lead after 9 minutes. Slick handling along the back line by Guyana provided the territorial advantage for Pearco Hamilton to break through the Barbados defense to score near the posts. The successful conversion by Satesh Samaroo brought the game to 7-6. Guyana stretched their lead further after Dane Parks scored a converted try shortly before half time. Number 8 Phil Lucas brought the scores closer together with a try 13 minutes into the second half for Barbados, only for Dane Parks to score his second try of the day and provide Guyana with a win in their opening game of the tournament. Guyana’s victory sets up a nail biting final days pool game against close rivals Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday.
In the second game Mexico once again displayed courage and determination to hold off a second half onslaught from Jamaica to gain a tight 3-0 win. The first half was all Mexico with Jamaica never having possession in the Mexican half. Mexico took the lead after 9 minutes through a penalty from Alesandro Chavez. Jamaica came more into the game in the second half and could have taken the lead on a number of occasions had they decided to kick their penalties rather than run the ball. Mexico’s defense once again proved resilient as they held out for an historic victory. Jamaica must now defeat Cayman by at least 11 points in their game on Wednesday, in order for them to qualify for the final.
