Barbados U19 9 - Trinidad & Tobago 5
The U19's won their first match of the 2008 U20 Caribbean World Championship Qualifying Tournament by beating Trinidad & Tobago 9 pts to 5 here in Grand Cayman. Barbados played into the wind & received the kick off in the first half. Raj Edwards caught the ball and immediately took the ball forward before setting up a ruck and then a long clearance kick by Ben Pettit took play into the T & T half. Constant pressure by the Barbados team forced T& T into errors and the subsequent penalty was converted by Ben Pettit. Barbados 3 T & T 0. Barbados continued to dominate the forwards exchanges but could not prevent the well drilled T & T line out from getting good possession. From such a line out in the Barbados 22m area T&T quickly spun the ball wide and Barbados gave away a penalty for hands in the ruck. T& T quickly took the kick and ran in an unconverted try. Barbados 3 T & T 5. The game was finely balanced with both sides attempting to dominate through the forwards. Barbados were awarded a penalty in their own half and Ben Pettit’s attempted conversion drifted wide into the wind.
Barbados kicked off the second half having replaced Kevin carter with Romell Byerand with good pressure by Henderson Reid and Sheldon Marshall won a line out in the T & T 22m area. The line out was lost as T & T tried to run the ball out of defence but excellent work by Sean Ward and Phil Lucas forced T & T to handle in the ruck & Ben Pettit converted the ensuing penalty. Barbados 6 T & T 5. Barbados were playing well and forced ball down field at every opportunity. T & T were forced to run the ball from deep and kept spilling balls a result of the solid Barbados defence. This allowed Barbados to push the ball into T & T 22m area and give away further penalties one of which was converted by Ben Pettit. Barbados 9 T & T 5. With Geoffrey Pilgrim, Phil Lucas and Runako Padmore injured Barbados sent on Myles Phillips, Marlo Clarke and Jamal Gonsalves to keep the team’s momentum going. These players slotted in well despite playing out of position and Barbados rode out the final surge from T & T and record the first ever win for the U19 team in the World Championship Qualifying Tournament. The squad was Dwight Forde ( captain ) Raj Edwards, Adam Boyce, Henderson Reid, Adrian Marshall, Geoffrey Pilgrim, Chris Cozier, Phil Lucas, Kevin barrow, Ben Pettit, Sheldon Marshall, Sean ward, Runako Padmore, Kevin Carter, Marc-Alan Griffith, Myles Phillips, Jamal Gonsalves, Romell Byer, Marlo Clarke
