Scorpions RFC 51 Development XV 22

With the BDF withdrawing from the Barbados Rugby Union league due to cricket world cup preparations and security duties, the Barbados Development Squad stepped into the breach and took over the remaining fixtures against Scorpions RFC and Renegades RFC. As some of the Development Squad are Scorpion Players several played one half for each team allowing the Barbados National coaches and selectors to look at different combinations of players for the 2007 Caribbean Championships.

Scorpions kicked off into a strong wind with the sun at their backs and the ball was fielded by Henderson Reidwho took the ball at the opposition defence and set up a ruck from which the ball was spun wide to wing Tshepi Matalenga but the last pass was adjudged forward by the referee. At this first scrum the massive Scorpions pack showed their power and shoved the Development XVbackwards and scrum half Mike rees spun the ballot Richard Sweeting who offloaded to the experienced New Zealand centre Cameron Whyte. The attack was quickly thwarted by John Millar and Tim Tulip and from the ensuing ruck the Development XV won the ball and moved the ball to Sean ward who released winger Chad Sandiford who showed tremendous pace to outstrip his opposite number and run in to score an unconverted try. Scorpions0 Development XV5. This reversal stung the Scorpions into action, a knock on at the restart by the Development XV allowed Mike Rees to pick up the ball and make a sniping run, offload to Ian Putley who set up a ruck which was won quickly, the ball passed through several pairs of hands before Cameron Whyte scored an unconverted try. Scorpions5 Development XV5. The Development XV restarted and Paul De Munnik caught the ball with the Scorpions forming a maul around him, the ball was popped to Donovan Bagweell who trundled over the gain line taking several defenders with him to set up a ruck, the ball was quickly spun wide to outside centre Mark Leacock who jinked his way past two defenders to score an unconverted try. Scorpions10 Development XV5. The Development XV kicked off deep into Scorpions territory but unfortunately the ball was moved to Richard Sweeting who put in a long touch finder for a line out on halfway. At the line out Geoffrey Pilgrim leapt high and plucked the ball out of the air feeding the ball to Brian Mandeville who then released his back division. They performed a set piece move bringing the blindside wing into the attack advancing across the gain line, but the Scorpions defence had held back and then swamped the attack forcing the Development XV to set up a ruck. The ball was then moved to outside centre Bryan Cummings where the Scorpions solid defence tackled him as he caught the ball, the ball came loose and Mark Leacock pounced on the ball and raced over for his second try. Scorpions15 Development XV5. The Scorpions continued to dominate through their forwards and loss of concentration by the Development XV led to many penalties being given away for offside and handling in the ruck. This allowed the large Scorpions forwards to drive towards the try line with Raj Edwards scoring while carrying two defenders on his back. Scorpions20 Development XV15. The match continued in the same vein as the Scorpions forwards with Phil Mayers, Martin Varga & Adam Boyce prominent, driving relentlessly towards the Development XV goal line. Frustration set in the the Development XV and they collapsed a driving maul and the referee immediately awarded a penalty try which was converted by Ian Putley. Scorpions27 Development XV5.The Development XV restart did not go the required 10 metres and from the following scrum Cameron white was fed by Mike Rees and he raced over for his second try which he converted. Scorpions34 Development XV5. Although everything was going against them the Development XV showed great character and with Geoffrey Pilgrim dominating the line out, the ball was passed to midfield and at the ensuing ruck, Sean Ward received the ball changing direction and passing on to Chad Sandiford who using his pace shook off two would-be tacklers to score wide out. Scorpions34 Development XV10. This score raised their spirit and they defended more aggressively forcing a loose pass which was picked up by Kevin carter who raced 60 metres to score a try converted by Sean Ward. Scorpions34 Development XV17. The try signalled the end of the first half and several changes were made to the Development XV team. The Development XV kicked off, Scorpions secured the ball and passed it back to Richard Sweeting who, using the wind, punished the poor kick off with a touch finder of 50 metres. From the line out in their 22m area the Development XV tried to move the ball wide but the Scorpions defence was solid and the ball got turned over. Using their heavy forwards to advantage the Scorpions drove to the goal line and as the scoring pass was being made the referee awarded a penalty try for obstruction which was converted by Cameron Whyte. Scorpions41 Development XV17. Despite many attacking forays into the Scorpions territory the reliable boot of Richard Sweeting punished any Development XV misdemeanours or loose play with long kicks into the Development XV 22m area. It took several occasions before the Development XV fullback and wings positioned themselves to counterattack from these kicks. This pressure kept the Development XV pinned in their own half and eventually George Nicholson scored an unconverted try and Cameron Whyte scored his third try. Scorpions51 Development XV17. Not to be outdone , the Development XV learnt from their more experienced opponents and began driving forward using quick ruck ball with Daimon Nurse, Chris Cozier, Henderson Reid gaining ground consistently. Eventually Jamal Gonsalves charged over the line for an unconverted try. Scorpions51 Development XV22 .
