| Match Reports |
The Scorpions recorded their first win of the season by toppling league leaders Brigands RFC at the Garrison on Sunday afternoon winning by 17 points to 14. The match kicked off with the Scorpions playing into a strong wind and the Brigands taking full advantage were soon encamped in Scorpions territory. The Scorpions however were dominating scrum and line out and were assured of quality possession. Unfortunately the rain came down turning the ball into a bar of soap and referee Romel Parris had no alternative to blow up for the frequent handling errors. Eventually the players adapted to the conditions and began to put several phases of play together and when the Scorpions broke out of their own half for the first time Dale Cumberbatch passed to Harold Bynoe who raced in to score an unconverted try. Scorpions 5 Brigands 0. The Brigands were having difficulty finding any cohesion having recruited several new players in the last two weeks and they were soon under pressure as the Scorpions mounted many attacks with powerful runs by John Millar, Mark Leacock and Richard Sweeting, returning after a long injury lay off. The Scorpions eventually scored their second try when Dabian Cumberbatch sprinted over under the posts for George Nicholson to convert. Scorpions 12 Brigands 0 The Brigands made several positional changes at half time, Romeo Byers to hooker, Ramon Gibson to tighthead prop and Lea-Andro Jordan to scrum half. The second half started just as the sun was setting and as in the previous game this seemed to bring the Brigands to life and the Brigands forwards began to win their own ball and put the Scorpions st piece play under intense pressure. From a scrum in their own half the Brigands sspun the ball to new player Jathaniel Brathwaite who showed tremendous speed and was scrambled out of play 40 metres down field by a desperate Scorpion tackle. The Scorpions won the ensuing line out and tried to clear the ball up field only for it to skew off the foot of the kicker into the hands of Leroy Brown who raced through a static Scorpion defence to score a try converted by Antonio Gee. Scorpions 12 Brigands 7. The Brigands continued to have the upper hand and were forcing the opposition to kick away possession to clear their line. Richard Sweeting averted a certain score when a clearance kick was gathered by Leroy Brown who passed to David Harewood who with support either side and only the fullback to beat chose the wrong option and came off second best. The ball was cleared up field and th Scorpions in hot pursuit began to get their big forwards diving at and stretching the Brigands defence. However a loose ball was snapped up and passed to Antonio Gee who scythed through the Scorpions from within his own half to score a try which he also converted. Scorpions 12 Brigands 14.The Brigands were in the lead for the first time and looked set to keep their 100% record with only two minutes to final whistle. From the Scorpion restart Dabian Cumberbatch leapt into the air gathering the ball and continued into the Brigands 22m area supported by Terence Vaughn, from the next ruck Dale Cumberbatch drove on and slipped the ball to Martin Varga who pwered his way to the line. The Brigands defence held and the ball was then fed out where Dabian Cumberbatch found agap in the defence to slip over for an unconverted try.
