Match Reports
The Barbados Rugby league continued with a close fought game between the Scorpions RFC and Renegades RFC at the Garrison yesterday in front of the television cameras. The Scorpions were looking for their first victory but were thwarted by a rejuvenated Renegades team led by the ‘EVERGREEN’ Ricky Morris.
Scorpions received the kick off and took play into the Renegades half Dale Cumberbatch & Greg Moseley prominent. The Renegades tackled fiercely & regained possession & using their speedy backs Omar Bynoe, Antonio Gibbons took play to the Scorpions 5 metre line where a penalty was awarded to the Renegades which was taken very quickly & Romeo Mayers fed George Nicholson wide out to score an unconverted try. From the restart, the Renegades were soon attacking again & Omar Bynoe scythed through the Scorpions defence to score a converted try under the posts Scorpions-0 Renegades – 12. The Renegades were becoming rampant & were stretching the defence of the heavier Scorpions forwards when Omar Bynoe put Antonio Gibbons in for a converted try under the posts. Scorpions – 0 Renegades – 19.
This deficit seemed to inject some urgency into the Scorpions and experienced half backs Stu Coupland & Mike Rees probed the Renegades defence eventually putting Mike Rees over for a converted try under the posts, this was soon followed by an unconverted try by Stu Coupland after several phases of play involving both forwards and backs Scorpions – 12 Renegades – 19.
The Scorpions were in the ascendancy and good inter play by the backs saw M Rees kick through and won the race for the touch down with Omar Bynoe but the referee gave a dubious penalty to the Renegades for obstruction against M Rees, whilst the Scorpions were disputing the decision, the Renegades took a quick free kick and sent Omar Bynoe racing away to score unopposed. He also converted the extra points. Scorpions – 12 Renegades – 26.
Infuriated by this setback the Scorpions threw everything into attack and strong running by Troy Grant & Johnathan Grant brought a converted try for Mike Rees and an unconverted try by T Grant. Scorpions 24- Renegades 26. The Scorpions maintained the pressure and a Brian Duguid ‘chip kick’ to Mark Leacock on the wing was knocked on with the line at his mercy. The Renegades regained their composure and worked their way up field and a knock on close to the try line prevented another score. From the ensuing scrum, Leandro Jordan put pressure on the opposing half backs and scored an unconverted try for the Renegades. Scorpions 24 Renegades 31.
At half time several changes were made to both sides and the game became a tactical stalemate as both sides defences dominated. The deadlock was almost broken when Ramoun Downes was put away and only a desperate tackle by Troy Grant saved a certain try. From the ensuing play scrum half Joe Kerwan went over for an unconverted try. Scorpions 24 Renegades 36.
Scorpions attacked at will from the restart and forced their way over the try line but dropped the ball trying to ground it. Finally Johnathan Grant broke tthrough the tired Renegades defence to score an unconverted try. Final Score Scorpions 29 Renegades 36.
