Brigands RFC Vs Scorpions RFC, 9 October 2005 9:13:00 AM
Match Reports
The Barbados Rugby domestic league got off to a scintillating start at the Garrison on Sunday with the Brigands RFC winning 24 -19 against the Scorpions RFC in a seven try extravaganza.
From the kick off, the Scorpions showed their intent to play free running rugby when Paul de Munnik caught the ball and fed Dale Cumberbatch who beat three men and touched down under the posts for John Miller to convert to give them a 7 – 0 lead.
The game continued at a fast pace and with the referee playing advantage the game swung from end to end until a good passing movement by the Scorpions saw winger Raymond Downes outpace the opposition to score wide out. The conversion failed, the score was 12 – 0 to the Scorpions.
Due to injury, young Lea-Andro Jordan moved to the wing, Deniston Shephard moved to scrum half for the Brigands and the team suddenly came to life with a very good handling move involving Shephard, Adon Rodgers and full-back Sean Ward which resulted in the full-back going over under the posts for a try that he also converted. Scorpions 12 – Brigands 7.
The Brigands started to assert their authority in the scrums and they pressurised the Scorpions defence into making errors allowing Adon Rodgers to score out wide. However the try was not converted. The referee called half time so the score remained 12 – 12.

The Scorpions kicked off the second half playing up the slope, but were forced back into their own half by some penetrative runs by Deniston Shephard, Julian Rock and Kevin Bruffet. Eventually a clearance kick by the Scorpions was collected by Deniston Shephard who showed amazing pace, considering his size, and he touched down under the posts for a try which he also converted making the score Brigands 19, Scorpions 12.
The game continued to swing from end to end with both sides missing several scoring chances. However, the Brigands moved to a 24 – 12 lead when Lea-Andro Jordan touched down for an unconverted try wide out on the right.
With 2 minutes remaining the Scorpions went all out to recover the deficit, running the ball at every opportunity. The final score came when Brian Duguid, playing prop somehow found himself in the centre position, produced a superb cross-field kick for Mark Leacock to gather and score under the posts.
Final score Brigands 24, Scorpions 19.
Through scoring 4 tries the Brigands gained one bonus point giving them a total of 4 points and lead the league from the Scorpions who have 1 point for losing by less than 6 points. The Renegades are currently bottom of the league on 0 points but they have yet to play a game.
The next match is on Sunday 16th October at the Garrison, kick-off is 4pm.
