Guyana is playing host the Americas Rugby World Cup qualifying Round 1a Southern Caribbean group as Guyana, Barbados, St Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago look to make the final against Bahamas, qualified from the north.Match day one saw Barbados come back from a 17-7 decifit at half time to defeat Guyana 27-17, while Trinidad & Tobago outclassed St. Lucia, running out 82-0 winners.
On match day two, after a promising start St. Lucia were again overwhelmed, this time by an exciting display of running rugby by Guyana, as they proved too strong to run out 97-0 winners. A total of 15 tries were scored, five by illusive left wing Claudius Butts and two by centre Theodore Henry, who also added six conversions.
Barbados, meanwhile, took advantage of their stronger forwards to provide the basis of a four try to one victory over Trinidad and Tobago by 25-13. Scoring tries early in each half, and with a particularly nice 70-metre effort in the first crafted by Kurt Johnson and scored by Antonio Gibbons, the Bajans were worthy victors.
This puts Barbados in the driving seat as it looks forward to its last group game against St. Lucia. The final match will see the old rivalry renewed between hosts Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
The winner of the Southern qualifier advances to play Bahamas, the winner of the North, on 1 October 2005.
